Ecoscious® disposable plates are made from fallen palm leaves of the Areca palm trees. The Areca palm tree grows in Southern India and is cultivated for its nuts. These betel nuts are mainly grown for consumption but are also used in the preparation of Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine. Around 7 times a year, the trees naturally shed their leaves which are collected from the areca nut plantation sites. In a year one hectare of Areca palm trees can produce up to 6700 sheaths.
After the selection, the palm leaves are brought to the factory or processing center for production and packaging. The leaves are first cleaned with high-pressure water so that any debris is washed away. After washing the leaves are mechanically pressed into plates and bowls. The press works with steam and heat. The heat ensures that any moisture evaporates and the steam kills any leftover bacteria. After pressing the pressed plates and bowls are cut from the leaf and left to dry a little longer. After drying the palm leaf tableware gets packaged and shipped.
No chemicals or coatings are added to the tableware, making them all-natural. The natural golden brown color or grains present in the areca sheaths are unique and different in every piece of tableware which gives them an elegance look.
Since only the best quality leaves are being used, the products are stable, sturdy and of course food safe. The tableware has good thermal properties; it is suitable for hot dishes or use in ovens and microwaves up to 200°C.
